Beyond tetanus: Maximising vaccine value in emergency wound management

Hospital pharmacists play a critical role in vaccine stewardship, particularly in emergency settings where tetanus prophylaxis is routine. This session examines how Australia's recent diphtheria and pertussis outbreaks reveal an untapped opportunity: every tetanus shot for wound management already provides diphtheria protection through dT, but a simple formulary substitution to dTpa could add pertussis coverage without any workflow changes. Drawing on Queensland outbreak data and implementation research, this presentation provides hospital pharmacists with evidence-based rationale and practical strategies to optimise vaccine value in emergency departments.
